Business Continuity Guidance for Businesses

Loss of mains water and sewerage

Scenario a): Mains water supplies denied across a substantial part of the country for up to three days with a subsequent three days of disruption possible. Serious disruption to sewerage.

Scenario b): Denial of mains water supply across one locality for up to a week.

Underpinning risks:

Scenario a) This scenario is driven by potential failure of the water/sewerage infrastructure or its support services.

Scenario b) This scenario could arise if a local water system became contaminated accidentally by a non toxic chemical. The recovery time is determined by the nature and extent of contamination and mitigation measures that might be introduced.

BCM Implications:

Consider alternative methods of working including rostering of the workforce to match cuts, closure of non-essential premises and movement of critical services to unaffected locales (including offshore) where possible and where health and safety implications allow.
