Becoming a Volunteer

This section tells you about the Government's policy on volunteering for emergency preparedness and response work, and it provides information on organisations that welcome volunteers.

The UK has a fine tradition of volunteering and the Government sets high store by the many and varied voluntary organisations and activities that form a key part of our national fabric.

The Government encourages potential volunteers to contact their local voluntary organisations, as those who wish to help increase the emergency preparedness of the UK already have an outlet for their volunteering.

Individuals who wish to volunteer their services in the response to emergencies can join existing voluntary sector organisations. Some of these include:

• the Territorial Army [External website]
• the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) [External website]
• Mountain Rescue [External website]
• or become a retained fireman or special constable.
